Overconfidence by Bayesian-Rational Agents
نویسنده
چکیده
T paper derives two mechanisms through which Bayesian-rational individuals with differing priors will tend to be relatively overconfident about their estimates and predictions, in the sense of overestimating the precision of these estimates. The intuition behind one mechanism is slightly ironic: In trying to update optimally, Bayesian agents overweight information of which they overestimate the precision and underweight in the opposite case. This causes overall an overestimation of the precision of the final estimate, which tends to increase as agents get more data.

Overconfidence by Bayesian Rational Agents Forthcoming in Management Science

متن کاملOverconfidence and delegated portfolio management∗
Following extensive empirical evidence about “market anomalies” and overconfidence, the analysis of financial markets with agents overconfident about the precision of their private information has received a lot of attention. However, all these models consider agents trading for their own account. In this article, we analyse a standard delegated portfolio management problem between a financial ...
متن کاملA Validation Test Naive Bayesian Classification Algorithm and Probit Regression as Prediction Models for Managerial Overconfidence in Iran's Capital Market
Corporate directors are influenced by overconfidence, which is one of the personality traits of individuals; it may take irrational decisions that will have a significant impact on the company's performance in the long run. The purpose of this paper is to validate and compare the Naive Bayesian Classification algorithm and probit regression in the prediction of Management's overconfident at pre...
متن کاملWhy Do Investors Trade?
We propose and estimate a structural model of daily stock market activity to test competing theories of trading volume. The model features informed rational speculators and uninformed agents who trade either to hedge endowment shocks or to speculate on perceived information. To identify the model parameters, we exploit enormous empirical variation in trading volume, market liquidity, and return...
متن کاملOverconfidence and Informational Cascades∗
This paper combines behavioral economics and social learning. Overconfident agents overweigh their private information relative to the public information revealed by the decisions of others. Therefore, when following a herd, they broadcast more of the information available to them. However, overconfidence trades the additional information revealed by overconfident decisions against more informa...
